Between 1993 and 2000, Transfield, in partnership with Japan’s Obayashi Corporation, developed and constructed Melbourne’s CityLink—a pivotal infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion by connecting key freeways and providing a seamless route around the central business district.

Key Milestones:

  • 1992: The Victorian Government initiated tenders for the CityLink project to address central Melbourne’s traffic challenges.
  • 1995: The Transfield-Obayashi consortium was awarded the contract, committing $20 million each in equity as project sponsors for the newly formed Transurban Limited.
  • 1996: Transurban was established to operate CityLink upon its completion.
  • 2000: Completion of CityLink, introducing electronic tolling and significantly improving Melbourne’s traffic flow.
